We've seen reports of schools advising parents to keep children out of rivers because of concerns about bacteria and water quality.

But is that really the right message?

At FLOW, we believe children should be able to enjoy rivers safely. Rivers are amazing places to paddle, explore, catch minnows, build dams, learn about wildlife and develop a lifelong connection with nature. They also provide huge physical and mental health benefits.

Like any outdoor environment, rivers do come with risks. Water quality can change after heavy rain, and there are natural hazards such as deep water, fast currents and slippery banks. That's why education and sensible precautions are far more effective than simply telling people to stay away.

💧 Check water quality where information is available.
🌦️ Avoid entering rivers after heavy rainfall.
🩹 Cover cuts and wash hands afterwards.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Supervise children and teach them how to enjoy rivers safely.
🐟 Respect wildlife and leave the river as you found it.

Healthy rivers need people who care about them. The more time children spend experiencing these incredible places, the more likely they are to protect them in the future.

Only a few months ago we had full aquifers and groundwater flooding, now the Hampshire Avon is already very low - less than 7cubic meters per second, anything less than 8 makes it much harder for species like salmon to get upstream.
