We've been having something of a social media detox for the last few weeks. Here is a different type of web from a chilly morning in the Hampshire Avon Valley.

A Monday well spent networking and discussing water scarcity, use and human habits at @uni_southampton Clean Water South’s 5th get-together. Water Wise: From Insight to Impact – Water Awareness, Behaviour & Action was a day spent hearing how we can make a difference as individuals, households, and businesses.

It was wonderful to hear @wessexriverstrust CEO Dave Rumble celebrate chalk streams and the measures being taken to restore waterways, and to hear how Portsmouth Water and those at the University are tackling public awareness and generating new thinking about how we can save water.

Suggestions from today included calculating your own water consumption using Southern Water’s ‘Water Calculator’ and using their water-saving kits for your home, garden, or children to get involved!

Another weekend fish video from the Hampshire Avon for you. This time its a larger Barbel (barbus barbus). This one weighs around 8lb, and they have been caught to over double that size.

Barbel are streamlined and perfectly adapted for fast flowing rivers. For those interested in angling for Barbel, are soon coming into the best time of year.

A bit of rain yesterday and one of Wessex Waters combined sewer overflows was releasing a mix of rainwater and untreated sewage into the River Stour at Christchurch. This will impact water quality and endanger water users in Christchurch Harbour and the designated Bathing Water at Avon Beach.

A change of river last week, with a bit of canoeing and camping on the River Wye. Like most rivers at the moment it was very low, with clear signs of nutrient enrichment. Still a beautiful place to spend a few days.

A shoal of baby Barbel in the Hampshire Avon. Barbel were introduced into the River Avon, and have since become naturalised. They grow to over a metre in length. These little ones are probably a mixture of 1 and 2 year olds.
