White clawed crayfish

Native and Invasive Crayfish Surveys

White-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) are the UK’s only native freshwater crayfish species and are protected under UK and European law due to rapid declines caused by habitat loss, pollution, and competition from invasive species.

At FLOW CIC, we deliver specialist surveys to detect the presence of white-clawed crayfish in rivers, streams, and ponds. Using methods such as refuge searching, night viewing, baited and refuge traps (under license), and eDNA testing, we assess population health and distribution. Our licensed ecologists ensure all work is compliant with Natural England guidelines and biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of crayfish plague.

These surveys are often required to support planning applications, restoration projects, or environmental impact assessments, particularly in areas where white-clawed crayfish are known or suspected to occur.  We also have significant experience with all of the UK non-native invasive crayfish species, and can support with bespoke surveys and management options. Why Survey for Crayfish?

  • Crayfish surveys detect the presence of native white-clawed crayfish and invasive non-native species in freshwater habitats.
  • They are essential for understanding species distribution and identifying threats like crayfish plague.
  • Required by law when works may impact crayfish populations or their habitat.
  • Help ensure compliance with wildlife protection legislation and inform planning decisions or mitigation measures.
  • Support conservation efforts by identifying refuges and breeding sites for native species.
  • Involve licensed techniques such as hand searching, night viewing, trapping, or environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling.
  • Often a necessary part of ecological assessments for river restoration, infrastructure, or land management projects.
  • Reduce the risk of unintentionally spreading invasive crayfish or disease through biosecurity planning.
