Fish Population Assessment to Inform Coastal Realignment
FLOW CIC were brought in to deliver specialist fish surveys on a complex freshwater / brackish system that forms part of a coastal realignment project near Wareham, Dorset. Through a combination of Fyke and Seine netting, we carried out a population estimate, including identification of novel invasive non-native fish species. Specialist fisheries consultancy advice was given on any potential impacts to fish populations present, along with recommendations for fish removal.
Fyke Netting Fish Survey
Working with the client and the main contractor, we assessed the site, examining the water chemistry, access, and various habitat types. We devised a survey methodology that enabled us to get a representative sample of the target species while working with other ecologists on site to ensure we didn’t impact the resident water vole population. As conductivity was too high for electric fishing, we decided on a mixture of Fyke Netting and Seine Netting, all of which was consented through the Environment Agency.
Project Requirements
There was a requirement to better understand fish populations present in freshwater / brackish areas of the site, where these areas might be subject to a different hydrological regime in future. A fish survey was conducted, targeting all species likely to be present, including the European Eel Anguilla anguilla. The client required specialist fisheries input into future management and mitigation relating to this area of the site.
Positive Outcomes for Fish, and the Project Program
Two hundred and fifty fish were caught, comprising eight different freshwater and estuarine fish species, including European Eel Anguilla Anguilla, Sea Bass Dicentrarchus labrax, Grey Mullet Mugilidae, Roach Rutilus rutilus, Rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus and Three-Spined Stickeback Gasterosteus aculeatus. We summarised the results in a report, which also detailed recommendations for future management and mitigation relating to this fish population.
